Grief

Have you recently lost a loved one or had a relationship, job, or friendship end?

Do you find yourself thinking about your recent loss more often than you’d like?

Have you felt like your emotions have been out of control since your recent loss?

Do you feel like your reaction to a loss doesn’t quite match how others have reacted?

Grief and Bereavement

Bereavement and grief are things we will not be able to get through life without experiencing, unfortunately. Bereavement is the process of recovering from the death of a loved one, and grief is a reaction for any form of loss – whether it be ending a relationship, quitting a substance you were addicted to, moving to a new home, or losing a job. Both bereavement and grief encompass a wide range of emotions such as fear, anger, denial, and deep sadness.

The process of adapting to a loss can be dramatically different from person to person, depending on your background, beliefs, feelings about the person or thing that was lost, and the type of loss, among others.

Common Symptoms of Grief Include:

  • Feelings of sadness and/or yearning
  • Feelings of frustration or anger
  • Feelings of worry or guilt
  • Feeling like you can’t accept the loss
  • Feeling detached from others
  • Feeling like you’ll never be able to move forward
  • Self-isolation from social contact
  • Behaving in ways that don’t feel “normal” for you

Every grieving experience is different. A person may be able to continue their day-to-day routine after one loss, yet not be able to get out of bed after the loss of someone or something else. Whatever your personal struggles are, grief and bereavement counseling have been proven to help.
