Does your child seem to not be able to pay attention or follow instructions?
Do you feel easily distracted and seem to always lose things?
Do you find it difficult to sit through a long movie without using your phone as a distraction?
Do you feel overwhelmed by tasks that seem easy to others, like cleaning your room?
Are you child’s grades slipping even though you know they understand the material?

ADHD is common among both children and adults. It sometimes causes restlessness and hyperactivity but not always. In children or teens, it can appear that they are not listening, blurting things out, not following instructions, or making impulsive decisions. In adults, it may be more difficult to spot the symptoms. You may often lose your keys, or feel the need to be doing multiple tasks at once in order to focus on one. You may have to reread the pages of your book in order for it to soak in – or maybe even this paragraph.

Symptoms of ADHD Can Include:

  • Having trouble staying focused or getting easily distracted
  • Appearing not to listen when spoken to
  • Restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Talking excessively, or feeling the need to blurt things out to prevent forgetting them
  • Acting without thinking
  • Interrupting often
  • Have a quick temper or “short fuse”
  • Losing things often
  • Saying to yourself often “I need to remember to do that”, then forgetting
  • Having to reread instructions or materials in order to comprehend it

Whether or not you or your child’s symptoms are due to ADHD, they can cause problems if left untreated. Medication can be helpful for people who have confirmed diagnoses of ADHD, but is not required in all cases. Many people can learn to manage their symptoms without medication.
